The Griggs-Steele Empowerment Zone Tourism committee purpose is to preserve and promote the heritage and lifestyle within Griggs and Steele counties; facilitate networking and the exchanging of tourism and recreation based ideas; coordinate and plan future tourism based events in both counties and promote and invest in nature-based and agri-based tourism opportunities. The goals and objectives for the tourism committee is also identify existing attractions, community values and services available for individuals and or groups that are planning on visiting our area. There are plenty of places to see along with hunting and fishing throughout Griggs and Steele counties.

Why is tourism important? Tourism can bring substantial benefits to a community and its residents. It is one of the few industries that brings new money into a community and as tourists spend money it creates a chain reaction through our local economy. Tourism assists in diversifying our economy; retail businesses benefit; new money and new tax dollars created.

Our tourism and recreational areas of interest are the following:

  • Sheyenne River runs through Griggs County.
  • Lake Jesse located between Binford and Jesse with perch, bluegills, walleye and northern pike.
  • The Binford Park is located in Binford and has three cabins for rent with opportunities to hunt and fish surrounding the community.
  • Ueland Dam located five miles east of Cooperstown with small mouth bass, northern pick, walleye and a primitive picnic area.
  • Opheim Cabin located in Cooperstown is the first house built in Cooperstown.
  • Griggs County Museum is located on the east edge of Cooperstown located in near the fairgrounds.
  • Blue Moon Antiques is located in Cooperstown.
  • The RC Cooper Athletic Club and KOOP Youth Center is located on main street in Cooperstown and is considered the place to be for youth and those that are dedicated to healthy lifestyles.
  • Scrap 'n' Stay is a turn of century bed and breakfast that not only can you relax but if you like to scrap booking than this is the place to hold a weekend retreat or reunion in Cooperstown.
  • Gracey Creek Treasure Box is located in Hope right on main street located in the turn of the century first bank building in Hope.
  • The Steele County Museum is located in Hope down the street from the Gracey Creek Treasure Box and is open by appointment.
  • Lynch Lake is located one mile south and one mile east of Finley stocked with fish; has primitive camping facilities; trap and archery range and picnic shelters.
  • The Finley House Bed and Breakfast is located in Finley on Highway 32 and is open by appointment.
  • The Golden Lake Resort is located 10 miles east on Highway 200 and 3 miles north. Golden Lake has camping facilities, convenience store and restaurant and is open year around for fishing and other recreation.
  • The Cooperstown Country Club is a nine hole grass green golf course located in Cooperstown. Steele county has two nine hole golf courses with one located near Hope of which is in the process of converting their sands greens to grass greens and will be open next summer and just 3 miles north of Finley the Hill 'n' Dale Golf Course is located out in the country nestled along some farmland.
  • CAB Park is located one mile east of Hannaford with perch and walleye along with a swimming area, camping and walking trails.
  • The Hannaford Community Center is located in the what used to be the Hannaford School and is home to reunions, wedding dances, community events and more to come in the future.
